To help you on your journey through the Green Lane Diary, we
have five special friends to help!
All of these animals, and their relatives are endangered in
Australia. Some are even on the critically endangered list.
If you are interested in finding out more about other endangered
species check out the Australian Government Department of
Environment list of endangered species.

Wendi the
Woylie
I am part of the marsupial Bettong family and related to the
kangaree. Scientists helped us to increase our numbers but we are
critically endangered again because of predators like feral cat.
Meat is not for me, I rather like mushrooms and seeds.
Walter aka
"Wazza" the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat
Howdy. I am one of the world's most endangered species.
There are only about 120 of my friends left and we live in Western
Queensland.
We are pretty special because we are the largest herbivorous
burrowing mammal in the world and I eat an awful lot of grass.
Sheep, cattle and rabbits have been our main problems competing
with us for food. Find out a lot more from The
Wombat Foundation.
Jeremiah
Tibias aka"JT" the Tasmanian Devil
My growl sounds scary but I am really actually quite shy!
Even thought I look grumpy, I'm a big softie at heart. I am the
largest of Austalia's living marsupial carnivores and before the
dingoes, I was found on the mainland, not just Tasmania.
I love my meat but I also do a lot of
scavenging. You might have heard about the Devil Facial Tumour
Disease that is hurting us. Read more about me so you
are clued up about The
Save The Tassie Devil Program.
Michelle aka
"Shelly" the Western Swamp Tortoise
Not many people know about me but I am Australia's most
endangered reptile.
I've been around since the dinosaurs and I only live in Western
Australia near Perth.
Summer isn't my favourite time and I sleep underground when the
swamp is dry. We need to look after our waterways where me
and my friends live. Are you Friends
of the Western Swamp Tortoise yet?
Shane the Grey
Nurse Shark
Yo yo! It's because I look so fierce that I am endangered.
People almost hunted me to extinctions years ago because they think
I look scary.
Appearances can be deceiving. My sharp teeth actually are
brittle and break easily. Don't tell anyone! You can
help to keep our oceans clean and learn more about sharks.
We are really interesting! Have you read the Australian Government's Grey Nurse Shark Fact
Sheet?
Kylie the Southern
Cassowary

I might be last on this page but I'm pretty incredible!
Yes, I have no tail and my quills don't allow me to fly but I am in
charge and love my rainforest home in North Queensland.
I can grow as tall as an adult human. My friends think I
am a little bossy but I don't like hearing about trees being
cleared! Where will we live?
Don't forget to find out more about me and my biodiversity in
the Australian Government's Southern Cassowary Fact
Sheet.
